Minimum lecture delivery requirement for 2024/25
All lectures that are delivered onsite must be:
- Created as a recording of the live lecture
- Published to students via the modules Panopto Folder
The recording must include
- Audio of the lecturer
- Screen share of lecture slides or desktop activity shown to students in the live class
Online lectures
- Online lectures held on Teams should be recorded using Teams
- Teams recordings must be uploaded to the module’s Panopto folder
Does online participation count as attendance?
Unless they are enrolled in a fully online module, students are expected to attend their sessions in person on campus. The University regards in person engagement as attendance.
Students should be marked as absent if they join the webcast or livestream for an on-site activity.
Different rules may apply to disabled students with an INAR.
What is the difference between Panopto and MS Teams?
Panopto (Webcast)
Panopto webcasting allows users to watch an online stream of an onsite lecture. Panopto allows a user to ask questions which lecturers can answer verbally as part of their webcast.
Lecturers do not need to monitor questions and it’s worth noting that there is a transmission delay of approximately 40 seconds, so questions may appear out of sync with the narrative. It is helpful for learners if questions can be taken from online users, but these may be answered at a later point by the lecturer or maybe verbally as part of the ongoing webcast. It is good practice to let participants know your approach at the beginning of each session to set expectations.
MS Teams meeting (Live stream)
An MS Teams meeting provides live online access to an onsite lecture which enables students to participate via chat, audio and video if appropriate or when required. This is the best option for sessions where lecturers expect students to actively participate in the live online session and are able to continuously monitor the chat function.
MS Teams recordings must be moved to the module’s Panopto folder to
- Provide access to all lecture recordings in one location for students
- Ensure that the MS Teams recordings remain accessible to students after they are deleted from OneDrive / SharePoint three month after the initial recording
Lectures can set up an automated transfer of Teams recordings to Panopto using the Panopto integration in MS Teams.

Panopto in classrooms and on staff computers
Will Panopto be available in all classrooms?
Yes, the Panopto application will be installed on teaching computers in all classrooms.
How do I start a Panopto lecture recording in the classroom?
Panopto recordings are started from the Panopto folder in a Weblearn module.
- Open the Panopto link on your Weblearn module menu
- Click the ‘Create’ button
- Select the ‘Panopto for Windows’ or ‘Panopto for Macs’ option as needed
- Wait until the Panopto application opens
- Click the ‘Record’ button
Guides:
Where do I find the Panopto link in my Weblearn module?
A link called ‘Panopto Recordings’ appears on the Module Content Page as part of the Ultra Module Template.
Note: The Panopto Recording link must be available for students to access webcasts.
Does Panopto work on Mac as well as Windows?
Yes, Panopto can be used on both Windows and Mac computers.
Can I install Panopto on my staff computer?
Yes, Panopto can be installed on a university laptop or staff desktop through AppsAnywhere.
Is there a way of using Panopto without installing it?
There is a browser version of Panopto called Panopto Capture and this can be used on any machine without requiring an install. Just make sure you have the latest version of your web browser to ensure it works smoothly.
Panopto capture can only be used for recording, it does not include an option to webcast.
Classroom Technology
What technology will be available in classrooms?
Updated Classrooms
- Simplified touch screen controller on lectern
- Dual monitors
- Lapel microphones
- Microphone recording the front of the room
- Ceiling cameras with tracking capability
- Document cameras
Old classrooms tend to be equipped with:
- Dial or touchscreen controls
- No ceiling camera
- Microphone installed on podium or ceiling microphone
- Single monitor
- Doc cam with camera
Will Panopto and MS Teams meetings work in all classrooms?
Yes, both Panopto and MS Teams meetings can be used in all standard teaching rooms, including rooms not yet equipped with the new technology.
Both Panopto and MS Teams should be installed as an application on teaching computers in the classroom.
Alternatively, both Panopto and Teams have a browser version that can be used for recording.
Editing Panopto Recordings
What editing facilities does Panopto have?
Panopto has some useful editing functions which include:
- A basic editor to cut out segments of the recording
- Change the name and description of the recording
- Editing auto captions
- Add timing and smart chapters
- Add quiz questions
Are staff expected to review each recording?
It is good practice for staff to spot check their own recordings to verify audio and video / screen recording has worked as expected before moving to the publishing stage. There is no expectation to view entire recordings, spot checks through a recording will give you a good picture of the overall output so you can decide the next action.
Are staff expected to edit Panopto recordings?
Recordings don’t have to be edited unless the session that was recorded
- experienced significant disruption in the classroom
- includes private conversations that were accidentally recorded during breaks or after the lecture ended
Staff can trim recordings on either end or cut other segments of the recording if required.
Panopto provides an option to revert to the original recording for all recordings edited on Panopto.
If a recording is edited outside of Panopto, please ensure that you keep a copy of the original recording.
Are staff expected to edit auto subtitles created by Panopto?
No, but ideally staff would review sections that contain subject specific terminology to ensure that the terms appear correctly and edit those if necessary
Are staff expected to subtitle student questions?
No.
Student voices are not expected to be recorded, so staff should summarise questions during the session to ensure that all students can hear the question clearly and so that the question is recorded.
The summary by the lecturer will be auto captioned when the recording is processed.
How long will Panopto recordings be kept?
Lecture recordings stored in a module’s Panopto folder
Lecture recordings stored in the Panopto folder associated with a Weblearn module will be available for the same time period as the Weblearn module.
Panopto recordings that have not been accessed for 13 month will be automatically archived.
Staff and students can retrieve recording from archive for up to three years after the recording has been archived.
Recordings stored in ‘My Folder’ (private)
Recordings stored in ‘My Folder’ will be auto-archived if they are not accessed for a period of 13 months.
Archived recordings can be restored until they are permanently deleted after three years.
Recordings stored in School or Department folders
Recordings will be auto-archived if they are not accessed for a period of 13 months.
Archived recordings can be restored until they are permanently deleted after three years.
Student privacy concerns
Audio recording
Audio is only recorded for the front of the classroom or through a portable microphone.
Students who are concerned about their voice being recorded should avoid sitting in the first few rows of a classroom if they want to ask questions.
If a student voice is clearly audible in a recording and the student asks for their voice to be removed, the section of the video containing the voice should be cut.
Camera recording in updated classrooms
Cameras will be available in the updated classrooms. The new rooms will have ceiling cameras that are configured to capture the front area of the room, focussing on the screen and lectern area. The cameras have advanced tracking capabilities to follow the lecturer as they move across the front of the room. Tracking can be disabled if required.
Students sitting at the front of the room might be recorded by the ceiling camera. If students do not want to be recorded on camera, staff can
- Recommend that students move to an area of the room that is not recorded after checking / adjusting the camera’s recording range.
- Decide to not record the session if there are no suitable non-recorded areas available in the classroom that meet students’ needs (e.g. for INAR students).
