Avoid common issues with Panopto

The 2024/25 audit of 222 Panopto recordings identified the following common issues with recordings:

  • Poor audio quality on some recordings: audio issues with recordings can be avoided by using the lapel microphone where available and checking audio before creating the recording.
  • Default naming used on recordings: the default name of a recording is the time and date when the recording was started. To ensure students can navigate and locate recordings effectively the names must be updated.
  • Incorrect screen or view being recorded: recording the incorrect screen can cause an inconsistent and poor user experience for students.
  • Failed or test recordings being available to students: Any recording which is not meant for students to view must be deleted or hidden from student view to avoid unnecessary clutter in the Panopto folder.

Recordings created in Student Preview cannot be accessed

Recordings created while using the Weblearn module ‘Student preview’ user will be added to the ‘My Folder’ for the student preview account on Panopto. Students will not be able to access the recordings.

Please make sure you Open Panopto before entering into the Student Preview user when recording in the classroom.

Any recordings made in the Student Preview will need to be manually moved into the modules Panopto Recordings folder

Use the Panopto for Windows/Mac to create recordings

The Panopto for Windows/Mac application allows you to:

  • add the recording name before you start recording
  • check audio is being detected
  • preview the screen which will be recorded

To set up the computer for recording, first open the ‘Panopto for Windows/Mac’ application from your Weblearn module.

Enter a ‘Name’ for the recording.

The recommended naming convention is Module Code, Week number (where applicable), Topic name

Check audio is being detected.

When you speak the audio bar should highlight to indicate that audio is being detected by Panopto.

No audio being detected by Panopto
Audio being detected by Panopto

Preview the screen that will be recorded.

Click on the ‘Enable screen capture preview’ checkbox to view a preview of what will be included in the recording.

Check that you see the same screen in the preview as on the screen in the classroom. If the correct screen is not displayed in the preview:

  1. Deselect the Capture Main Screen
  2. Select Capture Second Screen

Use the lapel microphone where possible

Using the lapel microphone will significantly improve the audio quality of recordings.

The microphone will be attached to the side of the lectern in a cradle. Check both sides of the lectern if you cannot find the microphone.

Take the microphone out of the cradle

When you take the microphone out of the cradle, the LED light will flash in red and then change to green.

Check the microphone:

  1. Microphone status
    • LED green: you are ready to record.
    • LED red: if the LED remains red, the microphone will not record (likely not charged enough)
  1. Microphone On / Off
    • No LED light: the microphone has been switched off. Press the on/off button and hold it down for 3 seconds
  1. Microphone muted
    • LED yellow: the microphone is on mute and you need to slide the mute button to unmute

Remove broken/unusable recordings

Broken or test recordings should be deleted and removed from the student view.

To remove an unneeded recording, click on the three dots for the video thumbnail and then select ‘Delete’
