Edit captions

Auto-generated Captions for pre-recorded videos must be reviewed and edited to ensure the captions match the spoken content in the video.

This is not required for live recordings of lectures, but all lecture recordings must include auto generated captions as a minimum. Lecturers can edit captions, eg to ensure that key subject terminology appears correctly, but are not required to review and edit all auto-generated captions.

Edit individual captions in Editor

You can edit or delete parts of the auto-generated captions in the edit view of your Panopto Video.

Panopto Guide: Edit or Delete Captions

Replace caption file

If you prefer to edit captions in a file, or need to temporarily remove captions before re-uploading a full caption file for a video, you can download, edit and re-upload the caption file.

Download the caption file

Go to the Panopto folder that contains the video. Open the video settings and download the caption file from Settings > Captions

Panopto Guide: Download caption file

Edit Caption file

The downloaded caption file will show the time and text for each auto generated caption.

Leave the format of the caption file as it is and edit the text below the timestamp as required. The edited text needs to be of similar length as the original auto generated text to fit the timestamp. If you need to change timestamps, use the video editor to ensure they fit with the recording.

Upload Caption file

Once you have edited the caption file, go the videos Settings > Captions and upload the file for the correct language, eg English (United Kingdom).

Panopto Guide: Manually Upload Captions

If a file already exists for the language, you need to click on the dropdown arrow next to the language listed under ‘Available Captions’ and click on ‘Delete Captions’ before uploading your new file.

Temporary holding page for recording without suitable captions

If you need to temporarily hide captions whilst preparing a new caption file for a longer video, create a temporary caption file with a note informing viewers that captions are not currently available.

Download the auto-generated caption file from Settings > Captions of the video and save it on your computer if you want to edit the full captions offline.

To create a temporary captions file, open a text editor on you machine and create a .txt file with one entry, eg

1
00:00:00,000 –> 00:00:05,000
Captions temporarily removed by lecturer

Save the file and upload it as a caption file through Settings > Captions on the video.

Once the holding file is uploaded, you can manually edit the captions in the Panopto editor, or use the downloaded auto-generated captions to edit captions offline and then re-upload.

You can now manually add the captions in the video editor, or edit the downloaded auto-generated caption file as needed.

If you re-upload the caption file to the video, make sure that you delete the existing caption file before you upload the new file for the selected language option, usually English (United Kingdom).
