Uploading Files

Files can be uploaded directly into Folders and Learning Modules by using the ‘Upload’ option, or they can be uploaded directly onto Documents.

  1. Select the Add Content (plus icon) option in the location you want to upload the file
  2. Select ‘Upload’ to open your file explorer
  1. Locate and select the file on your computer
  2. Update the ‘Display Name’ to a descriptive title which will be displayed to students.
  3. Ensure that the File option are set to ‘View and Download’
  1. Select ‘Save’

The file will now be displayed in the chosen location

File Options

Files will behave differently depending on the file type and where the file has been uploaded in the module.

Common file types can be set to render inline with the content. These file types include:

  • Adobe Acrobat Documents (PDF)
  • Microsoft Word (DOC, DOCX)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint (PPT, PPTX)
  • Microsoft Excel (XLS, XLSX. XLST, CVS, TSV)
  • OpenOffice Documents (ODS, ODT, ODP)
  • Standard text file (txt)

Note: All files that can not be rendered inline with the content can be downloaded.

View and downloadStudents can click on the file Display Name and view the contents inside the Weblearn module. Students can also download the file and save it on their computer.
View onlyStudents can click on the file to view the contents inside the Weblearn module.
Note: students cannot be prevented from downloading files because Blackboard Ally is available.
Download onlyStudents must download the file to access the content.
File options explained

Replace and Edit Files

  1. Navigate to the file you would like to replace or edit and click on the three dots in the file row
  2. Select ‘Edit’
  1. On the Edit panel, click on the file name to update the name which will be displayed to students
  1. Click on the ‘Replace’ button

Your computer file explorer will open

  1. Locate and select the new file you want to upload

Once the new file has finished uploading, you can edit the file options and description as required.

  1. Click on ‘Save’ to confirm your changes

Viewing Files

Files added on the main content panel

A file added to the main module content panel will appear as a link with the display name and description (if added).

When a student clicks on the file it will either download, or open in a document page where the file contents will render inline.

Files added to Documents

A file added to a Document will appear as a link with the display name

When a student clicks on the file it will either download, or the file contents will expand and render inline.

An image file embedded into a document can be displayed directly on the page without the need to click to open the file.
